it’s beginning to look a lot like christmas

~

Ed note: I have, as I always seem to have, an awful lot to tell you. The stories are piling up high and teetering dangerously, threatening to scatter all over the floor. But they’re going to have to wait today. Because today, it’s time for a little Christmas.

Katie asked me last night why Christmas is such a happy time. “I just love it so much, Mama,” she said as she put another ornament on the tree. “Why do you think it makes me so happy?”

I told her that for me, Christmas is a time of hope. A time when people seem, at least for a short while, to remember to be good to one another. A time when we all agree that magic matters. That wonder is important. That childhood is sacred. And a time when we all play our parts in convincing each other that believing hard enough in something can make it real.

So here it is — Christmas. There are a lot of pictures, but my favorites by far are the ones of the girls dancing in front of the tree. Come to think of it, maybe that should have been my answer to Katie. THIS, baby — this is why this is such a happy time of year. Because children dance.

So, just to be clear — yes, all of these pictures were taken in our house. Yes, we really have five Christmas trees (but four of them are really, really small so they don’t count and none of them are real so it’s not like we’re killing stuff). No, I didn’t photograph all the Santas. Yes, there are a LOT more of them. Yes, I know; I have a problem. Shuddup.

It was Katie’s turn to put Beatrice in her perch atop the tree this year.

It didn’t go well.

Katie lost her balance and Beatrice lost her head.

There were tears.

And shrieks about Ichabod Crane and Headless Horse Angels and “This is just wrong!”

It was going downhill fast.

But the rescue crew swooped in and just in the St. Nick of time, saved Beatrice.

And her head.

And Christmas.

Oh, and in case you missed it, this happened too.

Yes, my friends, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Ev’rywhere you turn.

  1. Talk about magic! You certainly make magic in your house. I can’t wait to join you on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

    Love you,
    Mom

  2. I am very jealous of your chef Santa! I have two Santas that are of that style, I love them. I also have two full sized fully decorated trees. One in the family room. One in the living room. The f.r. One is all of the boys or aments they receive in their stockings each year and a lot if my husbands as a kid. The living room is my fancy gold and clear glass ornaments only. I love them both. Daniel had the best time putting all of his ornaments on yesterday and talking about each one in detail. Merry Christmas

  3. No, you don’t have a problem. Children grow up way too fast nowadays, enjoy the magic while you have it, I have no one home with me anymore, but, still love to hear (when a lil one, or a big one) looks at my decorations, all the ooohs and ahhhs. The best year was when my nephew walked in and said “for sure, Santa is going to stop here” Yes Mom, there is a Santa Claus!!!

  4. The most wonderful time of the year……our Jeff is so into decorating, when he came home this weekend, he rummaged around in the many tubs to find all kinds of old decorations from the kid’s elementary school days and other assorted, not used in recent years, stuff to put around the way over-decorated house!! Gotta love it….and I too have the chef Santa to go along with the,
OMG, I just counted, 50 other Santas in the house!!
Enjoy and play that great Christmas music!!!

  5. Thanks for sharing! I love the old world Santas! I have two of them but would like to collect more. We also (when I am finished) will have 5 trees! A big fake tree that I can put up right after Thanksgiving, a real one that we will get maybe next weekend for our family room in the basement, a pre-lit 4.5 ft tree for Kylie’s room and then I have a small fiber optic tree and a small table top tree that I put in our basement guest bedrooms for when my brother and his wife and kids come to stay with us. I am finally finished puting the garland everywhere and can start putting all the empty tubs in the garage.

I am the one with a problem! I could fill up a good portion of a rented storage unit with all my christmas stuff!
