betwixt and be-tween

Nantucket Ferry, 2013

Pretty much sums it up

The following conversation with Katie took place last night as I was absent-mindedly puttering around her room, picking up various items of clothing from the floor and transporting them to her hamper.

“Mama, would you mind closing the door on your way out please?”

“Um, I didn’t know I was leaving.”

“Yeah … ”

{pause}

“So would you mind closing the door on your way out please?”

Hey, at least she said please, right?

Tween parenting — not for the faint of heart.

  1. I love it when my 12 y/o says something similar or gives me the eye as I am picking things up in her room. You’d think they would prefer us to be there picking stuff up for them but nooo. lol

  2. It was polite at least! We work it that our kids rooms are their spaces, their sanctuaries. I occasionally go in and dust and vacuum, but mostly they keep it how they want. Mine keep theirs picked up though. My neighbor of three teens said the best thing she ever did was stop nagging about the kids rooms and let them be a disaster area (door closed so she doesn’t have to look at it) it took a lot of stress out of all of their lives!
