are you married?

Before Brooke’s play last night, I dropped off the flowers for the kids to give to the teachers and volunteers. I found the buckets in which I was to deposit them waiting as promised. I looked around for a place to fill them, but found nothing but a water fountain and a small bathroom sink.

I saw the principal coming toward me down the hall and asked him where I might find a slop sink. He recruited the custodian to help us out. The custodian, an older gentleman, was wonderfully solicitous and asked exactly what I needed. I told him that I’d like one bucket 3/4 full of water so that I could divide it between the two holding the flowers. He looked at the buckets, then at me. “I don’t think you need that much,” he said.

I shrugged. “Okay,” I said, “I’ll leave it up to you.”

“You think you need that much?” he asked.

“Probably not,” I said, “but I figured it would be easier to have a little too much then to have to ask you to go back and get more.”

He smiled. “Makes sense,” he said, and, with that, he went off to the slop sink.

He returned a minute later with the bucket, a little less than half full. “I took the chance,” he said with a grin.

While the principal and another parent volunteer watched, we poured the water into the buckets containing the flowers. There was more than enough. We stood up and I addressed the custodian.

“May I ask you kind of an odd question?” I asked.

He looked at me suspiciously but said, “Sure.”

“Are you married?” I asked.

The moment was hilariously awkward. I’m fairly certain he thought I was hitting on him in front of both the principal and the other mom, neither of whom had moved a muscle.

“Um, yes,” he said.

“Well then,” I said, “I’m going to say something you don’t hear a lot. Ready?”

He nodded.

“You were right.”
