a really great book about a so awesome dad

After Luau’s birthday, I wrote a post recapping the festivities. In that post, I’d shared the following:

Finally, it was time for presents. Brooke went first. And her gift to him was pretty much the most awesome thing ever. And I’m not telling you what it is yet because it was so awesome that, with Brooke’s permission, it’s going to be its own post. So you’ll just have to wait. But I can show you his reaction to it …

Yeah, it was pretty friggin awesome.

A couple of days ago, a number of you called me out on the fact that I’d completely forgotten to come back and show you what her gift was. Thank goodness you people are here to keep me in line!

So, with no further adieu, thanks to Brooke’s generous (and enthusiastic) permission, here goes ..

Note: Images are photos of each page of a book that Brooke wrote and illustrated completely independently for her dad. Individual descriptions will be below the photos and will include some context, so they’re worth a look. When you see a blue notecard awkwardly covering parts of the book, it’s to block out the girls’ names because I was too lazy to use photoshop.

Front cover: The title reads, “A Really Great Book, by Brooke W.” On the cover is a drawing of Luau and Brooke doing one of her favorite scripts with him. He is saying, “What did you flush?” and she is answering, “The toilet.” Most of the fun is in the WAY that they say it.

Page one: On a page filled with multicolored hearts, the text reads, “Daddy is going to love this book I made.” (She was right.)

Page two: A picture of Brooke telling Luau that Steve is Joe’s Younger brother. She finds it hilarious to get him to correct her and say that Steve (from Blue’s Clues) is actually Joe’s older brother. They can do this for hours. The text reads, “Daddy and I always have fun together.” #truth

Page three: Luau’s SUV in front of the school. The text reads, “Daddy loves dropping me off at school.” Can I just tell you how much I adore the fact that she knows that her dad loves doing these things for her? Because he does. And that’s just awesome all around.

Page four: A drawing of Luau with blue hair, below which the text reads, “This is a picture of Daddy when he had blue hair.” Years ago, before we knew just how harmful their brand of “advocacy” was, Luau dyed his hair blue to raise money for Autism Speaks

Page five: A drawing of Luau in a tuxedo and yours truly in a white gown. The text reads, “This is a picture of Daddy and Mama when they got married.”

Page six: A drawing of our dog, Lucy, Brooke, me, her imaginary sister, Tinta, Luau, her imaginary twin Kiki, Katie, and our dog, Winston. The text reads, “This is a picture of the entire Wilson family.”

Page seven: A drawing of Luau and Brooke doing another of her favorite Blue’s Clues-inspired scripts. The text reads, “This is a picture of Daddy and I saying Handy Dandy Potato.” It is, as some of you might recognize, a riff off the moment in every show in which Steve says, “We need our handy dandy … Notebook!”

Page eight: A picture of Luau and Brooke hugging. There is a heart above their heads and the text reads, “Daddy is a so awesome dad.”

Page nine: A yellow heart. Text reads, “I love my Daddy.”

Back cover: Tons of hearts and the words, “Handy Dandy Potato.”

So, yeah, I repeat:

It was pretty friggin awesome.

      😉

  1. This has to be one of the best gifts ever! Brooke made such a great gift! (For some reason, I pictured Kiki a little shorter. Maybe it was the shoes she was wearing.)

Brooke: Your birthday gift for your Daddy is beautiful! You drew some awesome pictures of your life! I know your Daddy loved it! Thank you for letting your Mama share it with us. You are a superstar!
    ❤️🎉📖🎉❤️

  2. This book is so adorable. What a wonderful gift! As a side note (and completely off topic), has Brooke seen the Geico commercial with Dora the Explorer? I’m probably a little late to the party, but I just saw it this morning. Right up her alley!
